If you spent Monday glued to cable news' coverage of the US Navy Yard shooting, you're probably desperate to see the Daily Show rip everyone involved. Jon Stewart didn't disappoint last night, blasting the networks for unleashing "yet another force five wrongnado" of unsubstantiated speculation. He singled out CNN as notable for its "sheer accumulation of breathless wrongness." When Wolf Blitzer asks guests if they can "begin to draw any initial conclusions," Stewart thinks it's "kind of a semantic workaround for saying, 'uh, make shit up.'"
But then Stewart grew serious, realizing that at this point, when the networks get things wrong, you can't call it an honest mistake. "Because sadly the one thing in this country they should have great practice in covering are these horrific shooting tragedies," he says, even showing a clip of Jeff Zucker boasting that ratings went up after the network's Boston bombing screw-up. "This is deliberate. The chaos they vomit onto the screen ... is a feature, not a bug." (More Jon Stewart stories.)
