Dial-Up Hold-Outs: Some Just Don't Want Broadband

Posted Jul 3, 08 5:35 PM CDT in Technology

(Newser) – Dial-up Internet users might not want broadband—or at least not want it enough to pay for it. That’s the word from a new study that finds high prices and a lack of interest are bigger factors than lack of access for most dial-up holdouts. The story is different, though, in rural areas, where 24% of dial-uppers would upgrade if they could, reports AP.

Of the overall dial-up crowd, just 14% say they use the slower technology because they can’t get broadband. Overall, 35% cite high broadband prices and 19% say they wouldn’t upgrade no matter what. "That suggests that solving the supply problem where there are availability gaps is only going to go so far," says the study's author.
