      (Newser) - Despite an exhilarating final push, the Midshipmen were held off by Utah in a 35-32 victory in last night's Poinsettia bowl, the AP reports. Navy certainly made it close, bringing the score within 3 with less than a minute to play, and successfully recovering their ensuing onside kick.       COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV claimed its second outright regular-season Mountain West Conference women's soccer title with a 1-0 double-overtime win over BYU on Nov. 2. The victory over the Cougars also earned the Rebels (10-4-5 overall, 5-1-1 MWC) the No. 1 seed in this week's MWC Women's Soccer Championship in Provo, Utah.       New Mexico's Marcus Smith has been nominated for the FedEx Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award, to be announced at the end of the 2007 season. Smith, a senior wide receiver who leads the Mountain West in receptions and receiving yards, has overcome the death of his mother in September to help the Lobos contend for the Mountain West title. Sheila Smith, 52, died in her sleep of natural causes Sept. 16. A few hours earlier, Marcus Smith had 11 catches for 164 yards in New Mexico's 29-27 win at Arizona.       COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah junior Katie Battazzo was honored as the Mountain West Conference Sportsmanship Award recipient for 2005-06. The award is given to the student-athlete that has distinguished himself/herself through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The student-athlete also must demonstrate good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting and be in good academic standing.
