President Obama officially opposes gay marriage, but it looks like that's going to change soon, writes Dan Amira at the Daily Intel blog at New York. Obama told liberal bloggers yesterday that "attitudes evolve, including mine," and that while he's not prepared to reverse himself at the moment, "it's fair to say it's something that I think a lot about."
It's easy to read between the lines here, writes Amira (who thinks Obama has always supported same-sex weddings but couldn't say so as president for political reasons): "He's going to announce his support for gay marriage." It's not clear when, but "if Obama does support gay marriage during his 2012 campaign, it would be a historic milestone for gay rights." It's too bad he couldn't have done so earlier, but the fact that it now seems politically safe "says a lot." Click here for more.
