Torre May Go to Dodgers
New York Yankees manager Joe Torre answers a question during a news conference in Atlanta, the day before Game 1 of the World Series against the Atlanta Braves, in this Oct. 22, 1999 file photo. Reports suggest that Torre is heading to the Los Angeles Dodgers.   (Associated Press)

Joe Torre, who turned down a one-year deal to continue as Yankees coach two weeks ago, could be heading to Los Angeles. MLB.com is reporting that the Los Angeles Dodgers are seeking to dismiss Grady Little and hire Torre, although the Dodgers won't confirm the story. Last night Torre told David Letterman that "the Dodgers have a contract, I mean, a manager."

Hiring Torre would be a substantial coup for the Dodgers, who posted a disappointing fourth-place finish in this year's series. It would also give Torre a chance to prove he can win the World Series without the largest bankroll in baseball behind him. As for now, Little remains manager of the Dodgers—but the New York Post has reported that the club is trying to buy out the remainder of his contract. (More Joe Torre stories.)
