Before its hiatus, the Daily Show was mocking Obama and the Democrats—but a lot has changed in two weeks. Jobless benefits, the 9/11 first responders bill, and the DADT repeal, to name a few. Does this make the president, as all the media insist on calling him, “the comeback kid”? Absolutely not, said Jon Stewart last night: “Obama’s not the comeback kid … he’s Luke Skywalker!”
He then delivered an epic story, intercut with Star Wars scenes, of “a skinny kid with a funny name” who “came out of nowhere, and … defied outrageous odds to become the new hope!” But “meanwhile, the Republic…an Empire grows stronger! It all culminates in a crushing midterm election defeat, and even making out with his own sister can’t ease the pain. Alright, it’s not a perfect analogy,” Stewart admitted, before getting to the final chapter: “Against all odds, the Democrats manage to defeat an incredibly well-armed and well-oiled machine using stones, vines, and a well-placed log.”
