The man accused of murdering 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky has told police that he took the boy to a wedding, let him stay overnight in his home, and left him alone watching TV for a day before he smothered him in a panic. Levi Aron claims he left the boy outside in a car while he attended the wedding. Investigators attempting to verify Aron's account have confirmed that he was at the wedding, but haven't found anybody who saw the boy. Police say there are signs that Kletzky was restrained but have found no indication that he was sexually assaulted, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Aron pleaded not guilty in court yesterday to charges of kidnapping and murdering. The judge ordered Aron to undergo a psychological evaluation after his lawyer said his client hears voices and has had hallucinations. Investigators say they have found nothing in Aron's background to indicate that he was capable of such a horrific crime. "In this business you see a lot of violence, but there's usually some sort of irrational, twisted logic that's given to why a violent event took place," said NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly. "Here, it just defies all logic. And I think that's really what's so terribly disturbing about this case. There's absolutely no reason." (More Leiby Kletzky stories.)
