It's political high season: Rick Perry's spokesman says the Texas governor will indeed declare his candidacy on Saturday in South Carolina, reports AP. Which kind of amounts to an announcement about an announcement that confirms what we already knew. The distinction, says Fox News, is that Perry will "definitively" enter the race Saturday and not just form an exploratory committee or something along those lines.
"This is it," says one insider. The news comes just hours ahead of a big debate in Iowa among the other candidates and with Perry near the top of the heap in a new poll. Sarah Palin will be re-emerging with her bus tour the same day that Perry speaks. Which also happens to be the same day as the Ames straw poll. (More Rick Perry 2012 stories.)
