The wife of a British canoeist declared dead after missing for five years admitted yesterday that she knew her husband was alive before he walked into a police station last weekend claiming to be an amnesiac. Anne Darwin confessed when she was confronted with a photo of herself with her husband, John, in Panama last year, reports the Daily Mail.

"My sons are never going to forgive me," said Darwin, who didn't tell them their father was alive. "Maybe I just chose the wrong husband." She said she was prepared to "face the music." Darwin collected life insurance benefits on her husband, and insists she believed he was dead for "quite some time," but wouldn't say exactly how long. (More John Darwin stories.)
