A New York police officer shot himself in the face last night while on duty following a telephone argument with his girlfriend. Local residents heard a gunshot and found the 28-year-old officer's body on the street in Queens, the New York Daily News reports; he and his partner were in the area after getting a call about car break-ins.
"He got out of his car and he’s on the phone with somebody," a police insider says. "He puts the gun in his mouth and fires." A neighbor says the partner rushed to call for help over his radio; a police car carried the officer away "because there wasn't an ambulance." He died at a nearby hospital soon after. The police say they are still investigating. (More NYPD stories.)
