Obama: 'Radical' GOP Would Have Rejected Reagan

President Obama as expected blasted the GOP budget plan today as having a "radical vision" that rewards the rich and abandons the poor. But another line is getting plenty of buzz, too. He said the Republican party has shifted so far to the right that not even the Gipper himself could win a modern primary, reports AP.

"Ronald Reagan, who, as I recall, is not accused of being a tax-and-spend socialist, understood repeatedly that when the deficit started to get out of control—that for him to make a deal—he would have to propose both spending cuts and tax increases," Obama said. "He could not get through a Republican primary today." The president also criticized Mitt Romney by name for supporting the GOP plan. Responded a Romney spokeswoman: "The last thing President Obama is qualified to lecture on is responsible federal spending." (More President Obama stories.)
