US / Dharun Ravi Student Won't Be Deported for Spying on Gay Roomie Dharun Ravi's lack of criminal record makes the difference By Neal Colgrass, Newser Staff Posted Jun 18, 2012 3:56 PM CDT Copied In a Feb. 24, 2012, file photo, former Rutgers University student, Dharun Ravi, arrives at his trial in New Brunswick, NJ. (AP Photo/Mel Evans/file) Dharun Ravi won't be deported back to India for spying on his gay roommate with a webcam at Rutgers University two years ago, federal authorities say. The 20-year-old former student was convicted on 15 counts, including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, for watching Tyler Clementi kiss another man. Clementi killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge a few days later. Ravi was sentenced to 30 days, but his lack of criminal record apparently saved him from deportation; in fact, he's getting out tomorrow after just 20 days for good behavior.
