President Obama may have underestimated how strongly Boston feels about Kevin Youkilis. At an event in Beantown yesterday, Obama closed by saying, "Boston, I just want to thank you for Youkilis," eliciting a chorus of boos from a crowd still coming to terms with the trade that sent the star third baseman to Obama's beloved White Sox. "I'm just saying, he's going to have to change the color of his socks," Obama continued, admitting that he "didn't think I was going to get any boos out of here."
The Romney campaign apparently deemed this a major political gaffe; a spokeswoman pounced this morning, saying Obama had "committed an error" with the taunt, the Washington Times reports. But Jay Carney laughed it off. "Anyone who knows Boston," Obama's press secretary said, according to Politico, "knows that the preponderance of people shouting … were saying 'Yooook and not booo' for God's sake."
