A giant sinkhole gobbled up three cars and sent one man to the hospital on the Southeast Side of Chicago this morning, the Chicago Tribune reports. The injured man was trying to maneuver his car around the hole when it widened underneath him. He sustained minor head injuries as his car fell in. Another woman said she was about to get into her car when the hole opened under it. "It could have happened to me," she said.
The AP attributes the hole to recent heavy rain in the area. A city water department official tells the Tribune that the rain may have helped break a nearly 100-year-old water main, which in turn caused the sinkhole. (More Chicago stories.)
