The Carolina Hurricanes won at home for the sixth time in seven games and cracked the 40-shot barrier for the third straight game in a 6-3 win over the Washington Capitals last night, reports the Associated Press. Matt Cullen scored twice and Eric Staal had the go-ahead score in the second period for the Southeast Division-leading Hurricanes.

Alexander Ovechkin had three assists for the Capitals, who led 2-1 after the first period. The Hurricanes scored a power-play goal in the first period and then two more in a 3-minute span in the second period. The Hurricanes finished with 42 shots, the first time since 1997-98 they have done that three straight games. (More NHL stories.)
