Sixth-grader Irma Rodriguez, 11, collapsed during gym class at her Fort Worth school Thursday, and suffered three heart attacks in quick succession. Now, she's on life support at a Texas hospital, and her family says she needs a heart transplant. But a Dallas hospital has already refused to do the procedure, and a Houston hospital is due to make its own decision this week, Irma's family tells WFAA. Both the transplant procedure itself as well as the trip to another hospital are risky given Irma's fragile condition.
"I don't want to see her like that," says Irma's mom, Nereyda Verastegui. "Everything is so hard." The cause of the heart attacks is not yet known, and Verastegui says her "very active" daughter didn't have any known medical problems. The family, which doesn't have medical insurance, has raised more than $5,000 so far on a GoFundMe page. (More heart attack stories.)
