When Rosa Pineda lost her wedding ring in the Pacific Ocean, she cried and figured it was long gone—until her husband stumbled onto what she calls "a gift from God," ABC News reports. Rosa and Rudy Pineda were with their family on Shell Beach at Pismo Beach, Calif., when she dropped her phone in the water and dug around in the sand looking for it. The phone turned up, but soon after she realized her wedding ring was missing. "I just looked up at my husband and started crying," Rosa says. "I just started bawling. I was devastated." They considered buying a new one, until Rudy found a guy named Larry Royal at TheRingFinders.com, a database of "metal detecting specialists." So Rudy called the guy: "And he said, 'If you tell me the exact location you lost it, I guarantee you 99.9% I can find it,'" says Rudy.
They met 65-year-old Royal at Shell Beach, showed him the spot, and provided a photo of the diamond ring. Royal describes the challenge: "It was an incoming tide and there was a foot of dead seaweed in the water." Royal searched the area for 19 days and was thigh-deep in the Pacific when he got a signal. Sure enough, there was the ring about 10 feet from where Rosa lost it. "He gave me my ring and I just can never stop thanking that man," she says. "He told me to never give up hope. ... He’s like a gift from God. God sent him to me." They gave Royal a $300 reward, but the former scuba diver says he never charges a fee, ABC 30 reports. "I lost my wife seven years ago who used to hunt with me and it's my solace to go out on the beach and metal detect," he says.
