Actors Lena Dunham and America Ferrera took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday and went right for the jugular: "I’m Lena Dunham and according to Donald Trump my body is probably like a two." "And I’m America Ferrera and according to Donald Trump I’m probably a rapist." (Dunham's retort: "You're not Mexican.") The back-and-forth continued, with the Girls actress saying, "We know what you’re all thinking. Why should you care about what some television celebrity has to say about politics?" Responds Fererra, "We agree, but this is the Republican nominee so we have to talk about him." The jokes then gave way to a personal account from Ferrera:
"I am the proud child of Honduran immigrants. I am profoundly grateful for the access and opportunity that exists in this extraordinary nation. … Not everybody looks at the millions of young people like me, children born into struggling families ... not everybody looks in them and sees an investment. But Hillary has spent the last 30 years proving what she sees in us—not our color, gender, or economic status but our capacity to grow into thriving adults, capable of contributing great things to this country. ... Donald’s not making America great again. He's making America hate again. And the vast majority of us, we cannot afford to see his vision of America come to be." (More Election 2016 stories.)
