Cindy and Scott Chafian might have spent their 20th wedding anniversary renewing their vows on a beach in the Bahamas. Instead, the pair sat side-by-side in a hospital room drinking from champagne flutes and eating cake. And they wouldn't have had it any other way. "I can't think of any better place to be right now. If I had the choice to be here or in the Bahamas, I'd totally be here," Cindy told WTKR on Wednesday, a day after husband gave her "the gift of life," a new kidney. Cindy has polycystic kidney disease, which has caused her kidneys to deteriorate, and though Scott offered her one of his kidneys six years ago, Cindy wasn't willing to accept it. Then she hit "rock bottom," she tells CNN.
After two years on dialysis, Cindy could hardly "get dinner on the table for my family," she says. She was tired, losing muscle mass, and losing out on time with her kids, reports NBC Los Angeles. Finally in October, she told Scott she'd had enough: She was ready for his "amazing gift." The four-hour surgery went ahead at Virginia's Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Tuesday and Cindy says, "I feel better already." Scott has noticed a difference, too. "Just the light she's got back in her eyes, I don't even have words for it," he says. "She'll say I'm giving her life back, but I'm getting my wife back," he adds. "I'm the one who's lucky." A GoFund Me page is raising funds for their recovery. (This woman found a kidney donor through Tinder.)
