The New York Times takes an interactive, map-heavy look at just how many countries have the ability to hit any spot on the planet with a missile launched from land or a submarine—and the countries actively working to expand their capabilities. For now, there are just five who occupy the first category:
- United States
- Russia
- UK
- China
- France
But the
Times reports there are 8 more countries that currently have a range of at least 186 miles and have, in the last 20 years, been working to strengthen that range or their missiles' accuracy. They are (listed from greatest current range to smallest):
- North Korea
- Israel
- India
- Saudi Arabia
- Iran
- Pakistan
- South Korea
- Taiwan
Of the aforementioned 13 countries, nine possess nuclear weapons, per
Business Insider. They are (from most nukes to least):
- Russia
- US
- France
- China
- UK
- Pakistan
- India
- Israel
- North Korea
