"I'm a survivor of date rape," Mira Sorvino said Wednesday. "I have never said that in public, because it is impossible to share those kinds of things." The Academy Award-winning actress was appearing at a press conference with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, supporting stricter rape reporting and sexual harassment laws. She did not specifically discuss the rape, Fox News reports. "You feel shame. You feel like it was somehow your fault," Sorvino said. She is among the women in the entertainment industry who have accused former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse. A representative for Weinstein has denied that allegation, CNN reports.
The #MeToo movement this "has been wonderful," Sorvino said in New York's capitol, per CNN, "but it has been highly traumatizing for me on a personal level just because I have had to revisit my past and my demons in a way that I really had not fully explored. ... I had not really dealt with past traumas." Cuomo praised Sorvino's courage Wednesday. "I've been in this room many times, and I don't think I've ever heard a more intelligent, powerful, persuasive point than you just made — and God bless you for being so brave and courageous," he said.
