Sam Smith made a change Friday. "After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out," the English singer posted on Instagram, reports Good Morning America. "My pronouns are they/them." They came out as gender nonbinary in March. At the time, the pop star said they did not feel male or female, but "I flow somewhere in between."

On Friday, Smith said they were "surrounded by people that support me in this decision," per the BBC. "I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary," Smith said, "but I can't wait for the day that I am." Governments in the US have begun to recognize gender nonbinary status. Some states provide gender-neutral birth certificates, per Newsweek, and some have gender-neutral driver's licenses that often list the holder as "X" instead of "M" or "F." (More Sam Smith stories.)
