Since we were kids in school, we've heard America pumped up as a "melting pot" of cultures. To see which cities could stake the best claims to a diverse population, 24/7 Wall St. looked at US Census Bureau data for major metropolitan areas around the country, figuring out the likelihood that any two residents picked out from that area would have been born in two different world regions, including the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, Latin America, and other parts of North America. Read on for the most diverse urban areas in the nation, by the site's findings, plus the country of origin of the largest immigrant group in each:
- San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif.; Mexico
- Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, Fla.; Cuba
- Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, Calif.; Mexico
- San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, Calif.; China
- New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ; Dominican Republic
- Salinas, Calif.; Mexico
- El Centro, Calif.; Mexico
- Yuma, Ariz.; Mexico
- Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island, Fla.; Mexico
- Laredo, Texas; Mexico
