Usually when NFL players say they're trying to get healthy and get back on the field, they're talking about recovering from a football injury. For Brian Robinson Jr., a running back for the Washington Commanders, the issue was two bullet wounds to the leg, suffered when he was shot by would-be carjackers on Sept. 14, Yahoo Sports reports. "My biggest goal was to find my way back on the football field," Robinson told Amazon on Thursday night, per CBS Sports. "Every day, I came in and prepared to get myself healthy." On Oct. 8, he returned to practice, and the next day, he played in a game. And on Thursday, the rookie started for the first time in his NFL career, against the Bears in Chicago.
Robinson did more than play—he scored the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter of his team's 12-7 victory. He led Washington with 60 yards on 17 carries, 46 days after the shooting, then praised his teammates. "They showed me nothing but love and care throughout that whole time," Robinson said. "I can't do nothing but thank them for just helping me kind of get back on my feet and push me." He also mentioned quarterback Carson Wentz's help on his touchdown. "That's the second week in a row that he's thrown me a big block," Robinson said. (More Washington Commanders stories.)
