Police in Germantown, Wisconsin say a suspect was shot dead on a middle school roof during an "active shooter" incident Monday night. The Wisconsin Department of Justice said the suspected shooter was shot by Germantown officers around 6:36pm, when 50 to 70 students were still inside the school, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. In a statement, the department said police responded to a call about a person acting "erratically" in the parking lot of Kennedy Middle School. The department said that when officers arrived, the suspect climbed on the school's roof and opened fire on officers.

The person was killed when three officers returned fire, according to the department, which described the shooting as an "isolated incident." Authorities have not released details including the person's name, age, gender, or reason for being at the school, the AP reports. After the shooting, the school was locked down, with students later bused to an elementary school to be reunited with their families. All schools in Germantown, north of Milwaukee, were closed on Tuesday and Kennedy Middle School will remain closed on Wednesday, officials say. (More Wisconsin stories.)
