Kohberger Wasn't Near Scene of Idaho Slayings: Lawyers

The man accused of the brutal murders of four University of Idaho students in 2022 was nowhere near the scene of the crime when it took place, according to a new court filing from his defense team. Bryan Kohberger's lawyers put forward this alibi last year, and the new documents were filed in support of it, CNN reports. The filing indicates that Kohberger's attorneys plan to partially corroborate the alibi by bringing in a cellphone tower and radio frequency expert to testify, ABC News reports. "Mr. Kohberger was out driving in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022, as he often did to hike and run and/or see the moon and stars. He drove throughout the area south of Pullman, Washington, west of Moscow, Idaho," a lawyer for Kohberger says in the filing.

Defense lawyers have previously said their client often took long solo drives during the late-night hours, but until now had not met Idaho's law requiring a defendant to submit, in writing, "the specific place or places at which the defendant claims to have been at the time of the alleged offense and the names and addresses of the witnesses upon whom he intends to rely to establish such alibi." His defense team also notes that his phone includes many pictures taken of the night sky during these drives in the countryside. A criminal defense attorney not involved in the case, however, points out to Fox News that, per the prosecution, Kohberger's DNA was found at the crime scene and "DNA doesn't lie."
