A San Diego police officer died and another is "fighting for his life" after a speeding vehicle slammed into their patrol car late Monday. Police Chief Scott Wahl on Tuesday said the incident began with an attempted traffic stop; the vehicle did not comply, and a brief pursuit followed. "Due to a high rate of speed, a supervisor terminated that pursuit," Wahl said. "Two officers working together in one vehicle were responding to that fleeing suspect, and ultimately the suspect vehicle collided at a high rate of speed into the side of their vehicle."

The officer driving was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other officer is in intensive care, currently "fighting for his life," said Wahl. The speeding driver also perished in the crash. An independent investigation by the California Highway Patrol will reconstruct the accident, according to Wahl. A city oversight commission recently reviewed more than 1,000 police pursuits handled by the San Diego PD and issued a dozen recommendations, including that police pursuits be limited to cases involving violent crimes.
