Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe of Kenya has been extradited to Massachusetts nearly a year after fleeing the US, authorities confirmed Monday. He is to face murder charges for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu, whose body was discovered in a car at Logan International Airport in Boston on October 31.

Kangethe departed from Nairobi on Sunday and will appear in Suffolk Superior Court in Boston on Tuesday, said Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga. "I wish to reiterate my commitment and support, whenever needed, to the United States of America," Ingonga mentioned on Monday. The extradition order was issued by the court in July, although Kangethe dramatically escaped police custody in January when his lawyer visited. Following his escape, four police officers were disciplined. Kangethe was rearrested a week later, and the extradition process continued.

Mbitu, a health care aide in Halifax, Massachusetts, was last seen leaving work on October 30 and was reported missing by her family. Preliminary investigations revealed that Mbitu left with Kangethe and headed to Lowell, Massachusetts, where he resided. Kangethe was found in possession of Mbitu's personal belongings, according to prosecutors. (This story was generated by Newser's AI chatbot. Source: the AP)
