Authorities say a man suspected in a series of rush-hour shootings near Dallas is a former Utah state trooper. Dallas police said today that 37-year-old Brian Smith killed at least one of the two victims of Monday's rampage. Smith shot and injured himself after a standoff with police and is hospitalized in critical condition.

Yesterday, two people were killed and another injured in four shootings along or near a Dallas-area highway. Dallas police did not comment on the Smith's connection to the second death because it's out of their jurisdiction. A Utah Department of Public Safety spokesman says Smith had been a trooper since 1996 but retired in May because of "personal issues." Smith was wanted in Texas on robbery and burglary warrants.
