Some UK Advice for US Topshop Virgins

The wildly popular British clothing store Topshop opens its first outpost in New York this week, and Emily Rotberg has advice for uninitiated Americans. First and foremost, “don’t be afraid to push" she writes in the Guardian. "They’re not your friends.” Other nuggets:

  • "Sales assistants" aren't there to help. They're there to "demonstrate how to wear a $14 shoelace as a headband."

  • Take everything, "even if you're not sure you like it." It won't be there later.
  • Bring two assistants to wait in various lines for you.
  • Bring earplugs. The "carefully cultivated pop-hipster atmosphere tends to assert itself through an eardrum-bursting soundtrack."
  • "Leave your shame at home." Forget the fitting rooms altogether, "find a discreet corner, strip, and try on your super-skinnies in full view of the women who wish they'd thought of it first."
