Over 2 months after a Mexico City crowd booed Miss USA during the Miss Universe pageant, a national tourism official today apologized for the “incorrect behavior of a small group.” The blink-and-you-missed-it international incident started during the interview portion of the competition and crested after Rachel Smith fell backward in her evening gown.
The hostile reaction may have been related more to the debate over immigration reform then raging in Congress than to Smith's performance. Today’s letter, sent in response to an LA homeless advocate’s complaint, is the first official apology for the incident and includes an assurance to Miss USA that she is always welcome in Mexico.
