French President Nicolas Sarkozy rushed to Berlin 20 years ago to begin chipping away at the Berlin Wall just hours before it fell, he recalls on his Facebook page. There's just one small problem: it never happened, say critics. The French media have been chipping away at Sarkozy's claim, uncovering evidence suggesting that he didn't make it to Berlin until a week after the wall came tumbling down, the Telegraph reports.

"The morning of November 9, we were interested by information coming from Berlin," Sarkozy wrote in the post, which was accompanied by a picture of himself taking a small pick-ax to the wall. Critics note that nobody in Berlin was aware that morning that the wall would be coming down that evening, and point to archived news stories saying Sarkozy's supposed traveling companion was at an event in rural France at the time.
