Biomedical engineers, health aides will be in strong demand by 2018

Here are the careers projected by the Labor Department to have the fastest growth by 2018, as run down by the Boston Globe:

  1. Biomedical engineer: 16,000 in 2008; projected growth of 72%; median pay: $77,400.
  2. Network systems and data communication analyst: 292,000 in 2008; projected growth of 53.4%; median pay: $66,310.

  1. Home health aide: 922,000 in 2008; projected growth of 50%; median pay: $21,440.
  2. Personal and home care aide: (includes housekeeping and cleaning, less health care duties than No. 3) 817,000 in 2008; projected growth of 46%; median pay: $19,690.
  3. Financial analyst: 27,000 in 2008; projected growth of 41.2%; median pay: $73,150.
