Pop icon Elton John attacks the bullying of gays around the world and discusses his recent marriage. Under his own byline in the British magazine The New Statesman, the 60-year-old musician says he was afraid crowds would jeer at him following his London marriage to partner David Furnish 15 months ago.

“I was delighted and relieved…to find the crowd outside cheering and supporting our union. I felt so proud that day to be British,” John writes. On the other hand, he chronicles instances of discrimination and violence against gays from Moscow to El Salvador, including William Hernadez, a Salvadorean gay activist. Each of the victims," he says, “could have been me.” (More Elton John stories.)
