Serena Williams maintained her perfect record in finals at Melbourne Park today, beating comeback kid Justine Henin in three sets to claim the Australian Open singles title. Williams wrapped up the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in 2 hours and 7 minutes, and in doing so became the first woman to win the title five times. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Williams now joins her idol Billie Jean King in sixth place on the all-time grand slam winners list, with 12.

Henin fought with grace and style in only her second tournament after a 20 month layoff, taking the second set, but Williams' power was too much for the plucky Belgian. The day before, Williams joined her sister Venus in winning the women's doubles title. (More Serena Williams stories.)
