Gen. David Petraeus ramped up speculation that he has his eye on the White House last week when he spoke at the annual dinner of a conservative DC think tank. In handing Petraeus an award, Bill Kristol joked that the general might be the one to correct the "curious and glaring omission" that none of the award's honorees have yet gone on to become president, a suggestion Petraeus greeted with a lighthearted denial.
But the speech Petraeus gave sounded suspiciously like a candidate laying out his plan for the nation, emphasizing how his "big ideas" turned around a lost cause in Iraq, ABC News reports. Washington insiders don't put much stock in Petraeus' denial that he's considering a run for president. The general can't currently risk alienating the White House by showing an interest in the presidency.
