Pakistani authorities have arrested an army major they believe knew about the Times Square bombing attempt but didn't tell anyone. Some suspect the man actually aided the plotters as well. “We don't know yet how much of a role he had, if any,” says a US anti-terror official. “He did have connections to the Pakistani Taliban.” The allegations are also sure to fuel American concerns about the reliability of Pakistan's military.
US investigators have been given only hazy details regarding the arrest, which was based on testimony from alleged bomber Faisal Shahzad and another suspect accused of helping to fund the operation. But they did provide Pro Publica with a clearer image of Shahzad's relationship with the foreign militants. They say the Taliban funded the operation but didn't plan it, leaving the target and details to Shahzad. (More Faisal Shahzad stories.)
