Britney Is Twitter's New Queen

Just nine days after Mashable's prediction, it came to pass: Ashton Kutcher has been dethroned as Twitter’s reigning superstar. Britney Spears, despite a distinct lack of tweets actually posted by the singer herself, officially has the most followers on the microblogging site, though the numbers constantly fluctuate. Both are near 5 million followers; at the moment, she has about 3,600 more.

“Spears’ Twitter victory flies in the face of conventional wisdom on how to use the social web,” writes Jolie O'Dell on Mashable, noting that her account is mostly promotional (sample tweet: “At my photo shoot for the limited edition collection I designed for Candie’s!”), unlike Kutcher’s (sample tweet: “‘What do U think about Brittney having more followers than u?’ Answer ‘I don't care.’”).
