In the last few days, @BPGlobalPR has become something of a Twitter phenomenon, wracking up 44,000 followers, but BP's PR guys aren't too happy about it. Because, as will become instantly apparent to anyone who reads it, @BPGlobalPR isn't actually the oil giant's Twitter handle. It's a gag account, sending out messages like, “A bird just stole my sandwich! You deserve everything you get, nature!!”
The real BP Page, @BP_America, has a comparatively paltry 5,883 followers, hanging on such scintillating updates as, “Pumping started at 19.00 (UK) and 13.00 (CST) and continues.” The company's aware of the fake page, according to the Wall Street Journal. ““It’s a shame, but obviously people are entitled to their views,” says a spokesman.
