BP Gets Lid in Place, But Oil Still Flows
A bird covered in oil flails in the surf at East Grand Terre Island along the Louisiana coast Thursday, June 3, 2010. Oil from the Deepwater Horizon has affected wildlife throughout the Gulf of Mexico.    (Charlie Riedel)

After several hours, BP crews managed to get a lid in place over their gushing well, though how effective it will be remains unclear. The live feed shows that oil is still spewing from the site—the cut of the broken riser pipe wasn't as clean as planned, making for a not-so-snug fit, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The company isn't expected to make any public assessments until tomorrow morning. If this does work, the temporary measure will funnel oil to a tanker on the surface.
