The Ottawa Senators banked on a rookie goalie to protect their win streak from the struggling Atlanta Thrashers last night, and rightly so, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Brian Elliot, playing in his first NHL game, blocked 28 shots as the Senators improved to 5-0 this season—or 12-0, including preseason games.

Atlanta's checking line did get results, blanking former Thrasher Dany Heatley, who slapped six unsuccessful shots. Marion Hossa, who was out last night with a groin injury, will not return for tonight's game in Buffalo. But Ilya Kovalchuk, who scored the only goal against Elliot, bounced back from a first-period arm injury and is expected to remain in the lineup. (More NHL stories.)
