To mark the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Brad Pitt went on Meet the Press to talk about his Make It Right Foundation and the affordable, green, and safe houses they’re building in the Lower Ninth Ward. “These homes are elevated above Katrina floodwaters, they are stronger, they’ll take a category 4 (storm), and five times stronger than code, and they all have egress to get out on top,” he says. “So none of these homeowners will suffer those horrors.”
In addition, “this is now the greenest neighborhood in the world,” he says. Last month, all the houses except one were “producing more energy than they were eating. So families were getting bills that were $8, $12, just processing fees to tell them they didn’t owe anything for utilities,” he says. “That’s an amazing story. And there’s no reason now to build any other way. I see this place as a template for the future.” Click here for more on Pitt's project.
